Tips for Avoiding Plumbing Problems

There are several things you can do to prevent home plumbing nightmares.

  • Use the proper connector to connect an existing gas line to a new dryer or range. Kits will often come with a multitude of different adapters, so you just have to find the right one.
  • Don’t switch to galvanic steel pipes if your house already has copper pipes (or vice versa). The steel-to-copper connection can corrode, causing leaks. If you must connect the two metals, use a dielectric union fitting.
  • Know the plumbing building code. This will tell you where you can place fixtures, what type of pipe diameter to use, and more.
  • Don’t over-tighten anything, and make sure every joint has sealant unless it is glued or soldered.
  • Always perform a leak test before you move on to the next project.
  • Make neat cuts for water or gas pipe joints.
  • Know where your pipes are located behind your walls and don’t nail, screw, or cut into them.
