How to Prevent Water, Mould and Insect Damage in the Basement

Basements are unique spaces in the home, in that their lack of natural lighting and dampness can make them more prone to certain types of damage. Water, mould and insects are common threats for the average basement, and this article outlines how to combat these types of damage.

  • Flooding and water damage

In the event of a flood, the basement is the first place to be filled with water. Water damage can be highly destructive, but there are things residents can do to minimise the impact.

Combat floods by clearing gutters of debris and leaves. Downspouts can be extended and directed in an opposite direction so that rainwater flows away from the foundations of your home. Interior drainage systems with sump pumps are recommended for flood-prone areas.

  • Mould

Mould affects the aesthetic quality of a space. It can have a detrimental impact on both your health and the structure of a building if left untreated. Use a dehumidifier for very damp areas and repair any leaks and water issues quickly. Apply waterproofing measures where necessary.

  • Insects

Insects such as carpenter ants, beetles and termites can be attracted to damp and dark spaces. Keep the basement as dry as possible to discourage insects flourishing in the area.
