Maintenance Tips for an Effective Plumbing System

Plumbing systems are designed to operate effectively without constant attention from a plumber, but old and new systems alike can manifest different problems.

Householders can conduct basic maintenance and repairs to reduce the risk of common problems occurring:

  • Shutting off the mains – Shutting off the water mains is important when repairs or maintenance is being conducted on the plumbing system. Everyone who lives on the property should know how to shut off the water mains.

Additionally, it can be practical to shut off the mains when the property will not be used for some time, such as when the family is departing for a holiday.

  • Cleaning drains – Reduce the risk of drains becoming blocked by keeping them clean. Avoid disposing of oils and grease by pouring them down the drain, as this can create greasy build-ups in the pipes. Do not flush items such as cotton balls down the toilet, as they are likely to cause a blockage.

You should also opt for natural drain cleaners such as vinegar and baking soda over chemical drain cleaners, as the latter can damage pipes when used regularly.

  • Draining your water hearer – Some water heaters should be drained of water on a regular basis to reduce the impact of sediment build-up on the performance of the heater. Depending on the manufacturer, the water heater may need to be drained every 6 or 12 months.
