Kitchen sinks are prone to clogs during food preparation. While a serious blockage may require the assistance of a licensed plumber, most kitchen drain issues can be resolved without professional help.
What You’ll Need
- Classic-style plunger
- Petroleum jelly
- Gloves and safety glasses
Preparation
Start by pouring boiling water down the drain to see if it clears the blockage. If that doesn’t work, fill the sink with enough water to cover the rubber portion of the plunger. Apply petroleum jelly around the rubber ring of the plunger to create a better seal, making it more effective.
If you’ve already used a chemical cleaner, be sure to wear protective gloves and safety glasses.
Unclogging the Drain
Place the plunger over the drain, ensuring the cup is filled with water, not air. The objective is to push the clog out using water pressure.
Firmly plunge up and down, maintaining the seal, for about 20 thrusts. On the final thrust, pull the plunger away quickly. If needed, add more water to the sink and repeat the process until the drain is cleared.
Preventing Future Clogs
Prevention is key. Install a strainer over the drain to catch food debris. Never pour oils or grease down the drain, as they solidify and can trap debris in the pipes.
